I am from Christchurch. There was music around me growing up - for sure. I remember dancing to Michael Jackson with my twin brother when we were little. My father listens to a lot of music; he also used to play drums. I started playing drums when I was 12.
I participated in Smokefreerockquest in high school! A few times actually. Our band ‘Sand Fly Bay’ went to Cashmere High School in Christchurch. We won the regional finals in 2009 I believe. ‘Sand Fly Bay’ was an indie rock band that loved Kings of Leon haha.
These days I’m still living in the 03. Enjoying that Christchurch life haha. I haven't studied music since I left school - instead, I joined way too many bands! I started playing gigs, became a drum tutor at my old high school, and working in recording studios.
My years in ‘Doprah’ was an amazing experience. I made many friends and met some really awesome people. It taught me a lot and helped shape my own path as a songwriter.
What’s your process with songwriting?
Most of the time I start with a chord progression. Then I put a melody down using vowel sounds and gibberish as a placeholder. I will then write lyrics and refine the melody/chords. I find this is at least a good starting point.
How do you pick the songs you take into the studio?
If I'm working with a producer, I will bring in all my favourite songs plus some. It's always good to have a second pair of ears for feedback. If I'm recording by myself then I simply record the songs I feel good about. Sometimes I will write a song as I'm recording it.
What are two things you have learnt along the journey, that you would tell your younger self if you could?
To back yourself. It's too easy to doubt your own work. Be proud and keep writing songs.
You've got to be in it to win it!
